main verse up to the vault in heavensward expansion, everything follows in game canon - post vault it becomes divergent. a few headcanons regarding his childhood that are important to my interpretation can be found HERE and HERE.obviously, he does not die at the vault. the spear still hits him, but pierces through his shoulder instead of his gut and he is born to the infirmary on time for them to stabilize him. even so, what follows is quite some time of recovery ━ for the attack did not just damage him physically, but also corrupted parts of his aether. as a result, he was told it is quite unlikely he will ever regain the former strength in his arm & he will likely always experience aches and pains whenever he or anyone in his vicinity uses aether based magic. this also means he is very sensitive to high amounts of aether in general, making him more of a liability in any field of battle where high amounts of such is present.though he is told he can retain his position as commander of camp dragonhead, he has always been of the firm belief that any commander that is unfit to protect his men in battle when necessary is not fit to be commander at all, and thus he chooses to resign instead, and the title is still passed to emmanellain.the time between the vault, azys lla, estinien’s possession and nidhogg’s are mainly spent in recovery at the fortemps manor, which takes the better part of a year. though he experiences no little amount of frustration, anger and depression at the fact that he cannot join estinien and the warrior in their quest to defeat thordan, and then later alphinaud, aymeric and the warrior in their quest to convince hraesvelgr to help them, he is no less driven to find a way to save his best friend from the wyrm’s clutches. when the final confrontation on the steps of faith dawns, there is none that can keep him inside ━ despite the pain he is there, fighting on that bridge alongside aymeric and artoirel, watching as the warrior faces nidhogg and saves estinien.though he is confined to the infirmary again in the aftermath, recovery is a lot faster. with the war won and haurchefant feeling devoid of purpose and the identity he has clung to for so long, he sets off after estinien and travels with him for a while on his path of remembrance.they part ways once estinien decides to make for ala mhigo and the east and haurchefant decides to return to ishgard, not quite ready to give up his duty to the nation he loves just yet ━ especially not when he knows aymeric will need all the support he can get. ‘t is upon his return that he offers to work alongside aymeric as his newly appointed advisor and fellow representative and spokesperson of ishgard, while lucia takes over the command of the temple knights in aymeric’s stead so the man can fully focus on leading ishgard down a new path of reform. haurchefant then also fulfills a role as diplomat and ambassador in regards to the other nations, helping aymeric form new alliances and agreements in terms of trade, humanitarian aid, and military support between not just eorzea, but also the east once doma and ala mhigo are officially liberated from imperial command.

main verses

  • pre-calamity/a realm reborn.  following haurchefant as he grows up in the brume and then fortemps manor, on his path to become a knight and take over duties at camp dragonhead. this version of haurchefant will be a lot more angry and rebellious depending on his age, especially before he becomes commander of dragonhead.

  • heavensward.  follows the expansion of heavensward up until the vault, as well as his covalescence after his sustained injury at the vault. haurchefant post-vault struggles a lot with his self-image and self-worth so angst abound!

  • post-heavensward.  following his stepping into the position as aymeric's advisor and diplomatic representative of ishgard. he's also the spokesperson between the nation of ishgard and the scions, as well as the other nations of the eorzean and eastern alliances.

alternate verses

  • dark knight.  instead of living with edmont, haurchefant ends up at the orphanage after his mother's death and, following charibert's burning of the orphange he is found by the then still alive fray myste, becoming his pupil to train as dark knight and eventually follow in fray's footsteps

  • shadowbringers.  a verse where following his unofficial joining of the scions and his close bond to the warrior, haurchefant is one of the souls yanked by the exarch to the first shard.

  • scion.  rather than return to ishgard following his excursion with estinien, haurchefant keeps on traveling as well and eventually joins the scions as an unofficial member, acting as a go between with ishgard and the organisation.

  • ff8 au once an orphan of balamb garden, haurchefant eventually got adopted out, but later decided to return to join SeeD, putting him alongside squall.

  • ff16 au haurchefant served as a sworn shield to the duchy of rosalia until the duchess's betrayal and the duchy's annexation by the empire. he fled rosalith alongside the other shields that chose to remain loyal to elwin and eventually joined the guardians of the glame alongside sir wade.
